Berkshire's avg. annual return on businesses they own (Sees etc.) is almost exactly the same as the common stock investments (KO et al) about 25% plus over 25 years, if my memory serves me correctly.

Buffett has been more successful because with the help of Phillip Fisher (Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits) he moved beyond from basic balance sheet evaluation ala Graham and factored in superior management and franchise value into his "calculations".

He still beats the "old boy" networked guys because he buys when they sell and he BELIEVES that from time to time the market misvalues great companies and that's when he buys big. It's hard not to follow the herd but there is nobody better.
