Can someone please explain this fixation of serving in the military (beyond the obvious trauma of Vietnam which is a completely different issue). A friend of mine enlisted in the 80s, he was stationed in hawaii and did mathematical research, he actually wanted some kind of duty somewhere and couldnt get it I dont know why. Afterwards he came to California and got a job in one of Gene Amdahls startup companies. He much preferred the army to working in that startup company and as far as "service" to the community or whatever I think the startup company contributed more because they had some patents etc (ok nebulous I know) vs research on Burma which is what he was doing. WWII is one thing but that was 50 years ago, I dont think you can extrapolate some information on choices people make today and apply it to their hypothetical behavior should a military disaster strike. OK Im no expert on this.... better go back to the peanut gallery
