Qcom makes more money off the phones if they sell them, even Irwin admits that. The bad news about the q phones is that stores aren't out of stock because they're selling them, they're out of phones because the q can't supply decent quality phones.
Q is not as attractive a stock if they can't get quality phones to market. They had a huge lead on the cdma handset market and it seems they are well on their way to losing it. That IS A HUGE opportunity missed!
CDMA will take over the world, but in order to out-perform the likes of nokia stock-wise, these guys need to focus on gaining market share in every aspect of their business. It may be true that it's better to be a sub par supplier in a booming market than a great one in a contracting market, but I'm in this to maximize my investments, and so far the q's stock has been a loser. Like it or not, that is a fact.
I'm disappointed that after having the lead in the market for a few years, the q isn't making a killing selling the highest quality and variety of cdma phones available. Hell, they're not even in the stores! Jeez, this is the hottest x-mas season for phones ever and the q should be slaughtering everyone. the Surfer dude watched someone buy a MOT! UGH!!!
The good news is that it's getting relatively cheaper all the time and we may be within a few months of a major move. It would be more encouraging if they had their act together with the handsets.
In short, they are still young, but Qcom's phone business is not the "model of excellence" that I was hoping for.
