Actually, I believe that the original use of SAN did mean System Area Network and people just started calling it 'Storage' instead because frankly it made it easier to understand. I remember going to a SAN conference last year to listen to what people had to say about them (a lot of confusion ;-) and some people referred to them this ('system') way.

It kind of reminds me of DVD...this originally meant Digital Versitile Disk, I believe, but so many people kept referring to it as Digital Video Disk that people believe that "V" always meant video (it didn't ;-))
