I doubt if they could achieve quadruple density by making the tape thinner. The magnetic tape used in the DST cartridges is well designed to offer long life - an important factor in data storage. Thinning the tape substrate presents a multitude of problems, one of which is wear/strength.

I think it was accomplished by a combination of magnetic particle improvements on the tape, and to a greater degree, read/write head redesign.

If we knew whether or not the quad density drives utilize the same tapes used on the older generation DST's - that would eliminate tape improvement from this equation.

I would not rule out the possibility of keepered DST tape media being used in the density gains for the DST drives. The patent application for this which was issued on Dec. 1 was submitted on Oct. 31, 1996. This means Ampex has had well over two years to incorporate their patented media into their DST devices. Bear in mind, Ampex has probably worked on research for keepered "flexible" media for quite some time prior to applying for the patent.
