Would JP Morgan be considered a market maker? Or any of the money center banks? If so, according to the report below dated Nov. 14th, these banks collectively hold $109 B just in equity derivative positions.

It should also be pointed out that only $109 Billion in derivatives is exposed for less than 1 year for equities (stock market).

Couldn't VLS (very large scale) put buying (or call buying/selling) also cause market disruptions? Especially the very short time remaining options.

When I read this report, I looked up the 10Q on JPM and, although they didn't identify specifically any derivative positions, large sums were lost in some categories. Some of the balance sheet headings came under the convenient header of proprietary trading activities aka speculation. <vbg>
