Despite Losses, Corel Faces 1998 With Optimism

The company last reported a profit -- $6.5 million on revenues of $125 million -- in fourth quarter 1996. Corel's Cowpland, viewed as a visionary by some in the industry and as a big gambler by others, seems as undaunted by the mounting skepticism as by the recent ice storm that closed company doors for four days. He said he sees the coming year as a validation of his vision, while admitting that the big fiscal payback from Corel's Java investment will likely come later than 1998.
