Mike, there are places where the sheriffs would not only stand by and watch if you got lynched for burning the American flag, they'd gladly give a hand.
On the other hand, the vast majority of citizens would feel outraged, and express their outrage, which, imho, is the biggest difference between here and China, and a number of other places. Power always corrupts, but here in America we accept that, and try to keep it under control. At least, that is one of our central tenets.
With respect to the Chinese economy, I wonder what effect China's civil rights record has? I know a lot of people who refuse to buy anything made in China, because they don't want to support slave labor.
