Mike, I agree with you, so perhaps I am biased, but, what a very American point of view. Thomas Jefferson would be proud of you. He wasn't much on bowing down, either. But maybe you don't like the national anthem at sports events due to the bad singing?<g>
BTW, I do buy Chinese goods, basically textiles and crafts, because, while I accept the fact that the Chinese do not have political freedom, I trust that economic freedom will lead to political freedom. I think freedom operates on a feed-back loop. (Also, I LOVE silk! Today I am wearing a silk suit, yesterday a silk sweater, etc.)
Speaking of formerly closed economies, I finally found a set of matroshkas (sp?), Russian nesting dolls, with Clinton on the outside, then Monica, then Paula, then Hillary, and the innermost "doll" just had a saxaphone on it. I suggested to the lady running the kiosk that the innermost "doll" should have a cigar, instead. Unfortunately, I gave my sister he first set I bought, with Clinton on the outside, then Bush, then Reagan, then Carter (my memory says Gorbachev was the innermost "doll" but that can't be right). The two sets would be nice displayed side-by-side. She was a big Clinton supporter, so maybe she will be happy to give it back.
