Having heavily bought 3Com at $80+ two years ago (target price then set at $90 by multitude of analysts), I have been looking for ways to scrimp and pinch. I found these tips in the WSJ yesterday and want to share with this long-suffering thread.


EVERYONE KNOWS Asian consumers are cutting back on everything from foreign travel to dining out. But Lee Yem Yeng, managing director of Insight Research of Kuala Lumpur, is finding that consumers are using other creative ways to scrimp and pinch.

Among Ms. Lee's findings, culled from interviews with residents of metropolitan Kuala Lumpur:

-Cutting long hair into a cropped style to reduce the need for shampoo.
-Dabbing lotion only under the eyes instead of on the whole face.
-Aiming insecticide at individual mosquitoes instead of spraying the entire room.
-Mixing premium instant noodles with less expensive brands.
-Entertaining business clients at KFC and Pizza Hut.
-Using half the recommended amount of drink mix.
-Ordering beer for the entire evening during happy hour.


However, be careful with tip 3 if you live in Houston, Texas. Here the mosquitoes are so abundant that it is more economical to spray yourself from head to toes with insecticide rather than aim at the mosquitoes. Besides, it is a well-known fact that Houstonians can't aim at anything smaller than a cow farther than 3 feet.
