The world of MAYA.

Ravi:

Here is a bit of news from the music front.

..Defying convention, Maya wants to prove that there is more to her than just her music.

In a time when the likes of Alanis Morissette have experienced an inner change thanks to India, the question is whether the west can now accept an artist of Indian origin in the mainstream. Kerala-raised California-based singer Maya would like to think so. Her debut CD "Ahimsa" (Sanskrit for non-violence) is a determined attempt to prove that an Indian artist rendering English songs isn't such a far-fetched idea after all. Speaking on the phone from California, Maya adds in her Indo-American accent, "In the US, there is not a big, concentrated audience for an ethnic Indian singer unlike the UK where we have seen many artists seeing some success. On the other hand, our community is also traditional in accepting an Indian singing in English but the mainstream seems to be more open to this idea." And then with a sigh she also adds, "It takes a Madonna (chanting in Sanskrit) to make India more acceptable in the west."..
