Here is my story. I always liked Gingrich because way back in the dark days, he was the bad boy of CSPAN. I used to watch the channel and loved watching him pound away at the Democrat Controlled Congress...live at like 11 pm EST on Saturday night to an empty chamber. I always wondered what would the Country be like if he were in control. Then one day, Gingrich came up with a plan for the Republicans to win back control of Congress. It was called "The Contract With America". It basically outlined 10 ideas that the Republicans would enact if the people would put them in power. The ideas were: Less Government, a balanced budget, a line item veto, welfare reform, a stronger military that would never take orders from the UN, no more unfunded mandates, wise use of natural resources, and term limits for Congress. The fact is, the American public loved it...they swept away them Do nothing Dems in a massive landslide in 1994. Further, the Republicans kept their promises and enacted 70% of the Contract with America. The wise use provisions were seen as too anti environment by Republicans on committee and it died. The line item veto was struck down by the Supreme Court. The Balanced Budget Amendment died by 1 vote in the Senate when Senator Diane Feinstein proved to be a liar and voted against it (despite saying she was for it when she ran for election in '92).
Otherwise, the Rest of the Contract became law. Thats a fact.
What happened to Newt Gingrich this year was a problem of internal disagreements (which there are many) with the Republicans. Newt was seen as too soft on Clinton. The Republicans did not even have a platform this year for what the plan was in the 106th Congress. Instead, they felt it was best to wait out the election and see what the voters would say about Bill Clinton. It gave the Democrats the opportunity to make the issues. Here in California, Democrats chose the method of telling "The Big Lie" which if you know your history, goes back to Hitlers propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels who developed the method. In a nutshell, if you tell a lie often enough, it will become a fact. The Democrats in California all ran negative adds portraying Republicans as:
1) Wanting to put machine guns in the hands of children.
2) Wanting to ban abortion.
3) Wanting toxic waste to be thrown all over the place.
It worked. The voters thought the sky was falling and went out in mass to stop those evil Republicans. Of course it was all lies. The "Big Lie" method works when people are gullable.
