File sharing is for Networking, if you have two computers connected with a null modem cable you can share files between computers. You will see a little hand under a drive that is shared. I have been informed that Windows 95/98 has backdoor access even if file sharing is turned off.

People with cable modems should use firewalls and make sure they are configured by someone who knows what they are doing.

I run a separate computer that acts as my firewall / gateway to the Internet, that's the only function that entire computer does. Then my other computer is networked into that one to surf the web. A friend of mine does this for a living, he specializes in Sun Microsystems, and network & Internet security.

Don't become overly paranoid about being hacked. If you use a dial-up connection, your IP address changes every time you dial in. I believe, if you're a high profile target, you are a candidate for a hack, also if you're a woman, you are more at risk than a man. There are other things jerks can do to you, IP Flooding, Spam attacks, etc.

Woman should never use their real name on the Internet. I can't believe how much info some people volunteer in profiles.

Don't you find it strange:
THE REAL WORLD…..The police / security experts advise single women to use their first initial in the phone book, don't advertise you're a woman by displaying, for example. Sandie Smith, you would display S. Smith. Don't put your address in the phone book, also, when you leave a message on your answering machine say" were are busy right now, and can't take your call….." ,NOT: "Hi this is Sandie, I am not home right now………"

So why do people break the rules with the Internet where you have millions and millions of people viewing your post or what you display in your profile? The Internet is so new, security issues haven't fully been address yet. I will say this again, Why do you take security precautions at home, and in your telephone book, but break them on the Internet?

Does this make any sense?
