Gottfried, You forgot to mention that the computer recommended by Barron's has Zip as a standard, too:
In the end, our Dell package came loaded to the hilt and reasonably priced. For about $2,900, it boasts something like twice the speed and memory of the $1,000 offerings mentioned above. The reason: a Pentium II processor with 450 MHz of power, 128 megabytes of RAM and, just to make everything run a bit faster still, 512 kilobytes of integrated cache, a fast-access memory chip. The hard drive was more than ample at 14.4 gigabytes, enough to store 129 complete sets of the 32-volume Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Along with all this computing brawn came a keyboard, a mouse, a bunch of bundled software, plus a full 12 months of guaranteed service in your home. And there was more. The Dell package included a powerful 16-MB video card, which makes videos run more smoothly and stills look simply fantastic. Then there was a US Robotics V.90 modem, which gives you the ability to rapidly send data and access the 'Net. For a great display of material from both CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs, there was a 4.8x DVD drive. For sound, the package featured impressive Altec Lansing speakers, and it had a Zip drive, too.
