You need to see "Elizabeth", the new movie (not the best on that subject I have seen, an ok film nonetheless) where the pope issues a decree that anyone that kills queen elizabeth (the heretic) will be guaranteed a place in heaven. Meanwhile there is misc entertainment for the masses where anyone that worships at the wrong church is burned alive. It seems inhumane I know but lets remember, there were no TVs or internet then. People had to do something with all that time on their hands.
