I used to sleep in a screened in back porch in my dad's mother's house in Meridian, Mississippi. This is where hot weather was invented. We would go there on vacation when I was growing up in Virginia.

The house may not have had air conditioning, but it was something special. It had been a boarding house. It had 12 foot ceilings, there were transom windows over every door, the front porch ran the whole length of the house and was two stories high. There were claw-footed bathtubs. My grandmother had had it built with the proceeds of a millinery shop she had run very successfully in the early 1900s. It was torn down after my grandmother passed away.
