Sounds like we had the same type of childhood. Mine sucked for some of the same reasons yours did. I decided a long time ago that when I had children I would place a higher value on conformity than did my parents. I value high intelligence and creativity but in public you can get the sh*t beat out of you for expressing it. I know it is a rough choice and I had some MAJOR debates with friends in college over this issue- but my opinion was then, and is now, that it is better to be a happy conformist believer in the system than to be a lonely, brilliant, but possibly more rational, free thinker. Of course I would never force my children to be conformists, but unlike my parents, I do not belittle group think (except where it involves being cruel to others). I would never discourage their beliefs in deities, in fact if it made them happy and they had they ability to believe I think I could even be happy for them.
