Coby, my mom's family are from New Orleans. The first of the line was a soldier with Bienville when the French founded Biloxi and New Orleans. There's a little town along the Mississippi named for them, Buras. One of this Buras line ran off and left his family around 1800; he returned to fight in the Battle of New Orleans, but left shortly thereafter. He had managed to accumulate a lot of money in his absence. Considering that Jaques LaFitte, the pirate, supplied some troops in the Battle of New Orleans, we think we know what Mr Buras was doing that made him rich.
