Fred, I am familiar with the town of Buras. Would you forgive me if I told you that Lafitte's first name was Jean not Jacques?

Lafitte's brand of "piracy" is easier to understand if you recognize that France practiced mercantilism in French Louisiana, and required all goods sold in Louisiana to either originate in France or pay a duty? What Lafitte did, mostly, was sell goods on the black market. So, if your ancestor was a compatriot of Lafitte, he was just an entrepeneur.
