Hi Joe...About NEST
Even their internal memo is not very clear. They are going to merge NEST with their two main divisions IAD and IID and they are looking for parteners for the powerline and gateway technologies. Then, if they are going full bore in NEST development, why are they firing people?. I don't understand it; do you?.
On another subject, I read somewhere that MSFT is working on clustering for NT which will make it unbeatable. Today, I found this article:
--------------------- Novell Endorses NetFRAME Clusters Software; NetFRAME's New ClusterData Software Enables IntranetWare Customers to Deploy State-of-the-Art Clustering Solutions Today
MILPITAS, CALIF. (Jan. 15) BUSINESS WIRE -Jan. 15, 1997--NetFRAME Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:NETF), the leading supplier of continuous availability network servers, today announced that Novell is endorsing NetFRAME's ClusterData software for NetWare servers.
NetFRAME's ClusterData uses Novell's industry-leading NetWare Directory Services (NDS) to enable IntranetWare users to build high-performance, highly reliable network serving environments by clustering multiple servers on a network.
NetFRAME's ClusterData provides server failover among multiple IntranetWare systems without the need for a hot standby system. Unlike many current fault tolerant technologies, where a second system simply waits in standby mode, ClusterData enables each system to act both as the primary server for its own users and as a backup server.
This approach maximizes the corporation's investment in computing resources, as each server in the cluster is responsible for a set of users and workload, while transparently providing backup for other servers in the cluster. Because the software is based on Novell's NetWare Directory Services (NDS), it makes continuously available computing transparent to the end user.
In the event that a primary server fails, ClusterData automatically re-hosts the NDS volume objects from a failed server to a surviving backup server.
"ClusterData provides our customers who are setting up intranets with a solution that gives them 100% backup for their servers," said Denice Gibson, senior vice president and general manager of the Internet Access Division at Novell.
"ClusterData uses existing clustering technologies that demonstrate the power of NDS. By using ClusterData at the NDS layer across multiple servers, NetFRAME makes the serving environment resilient to operating system and application software errors, without requiring custom versions of those software packages. Novell's robust directory services enabled NetFRAME to implement this exciting software."
"ClusterData is an ideal solution for IntranetWare users, because it provides both an immediate solution for continuous computing, and the promise of a smooth migration to emerging second-generation clustering technology," said Steve Huey, vice president of marketing at NetFRAME.
"Novell and NetFRAME have a ten-year history of working closely together on emerging technology. As the ClusterData product line evolves, NetFRAME plans to continue offering added value to Novell's solutions." ---------------------
Is this announcement significant?. I would appreciate it if you or other technical gurus on the board (Where are you Eric Hall?) shed some light on clustering and the significance of this announcement.
