Sun's server business grew at 37 percent year over year in the most recent quarter, compared with HP's 11.8 percent, according to Dataquest. In the same period, IBM's server sales decreased 16.2 percent and Compaq's shrank by 7.2 percent.
But sales of workstations and servers to corporations and Internet service providers are still what make Sun's cash registers cling on a day-to-day basis.
Analysts sing Sun's praises. Merrill Lynch & Co. ranked Sun as the top computer maker in its latest ''financial scorecard,'' a report that rates companies based on revenue per employee, revenue growth, operating margins and other financial data.
''In many ways, Sun is probably at or close to its strongest position ever,'' says Laura Conigliaro, an analyst with Goldman Sachs. ''To the extent that they are able to execute, I don't see that changing.''
Investors are listening.
it's great to find true value and jump in before the analysts get hold of a company. I m already discovering more value oriented compainies that will go up atleast 50% from here. time to jump into dell was every one was shorting at 15 just last year.
Sun's shares doubled in value between Oct. 5 and Nov. 27 to an all-time high of $80.38. They since have declined slightly, closing Friday at $75.19.
