Shotgun houses are pretty much the standard in lower-class neighborhoords in New Orleans, or used to be at any rate, not much building going on in Orleans Parish, or so I am told.
So-called "shotgun" because you could stand in the front doorway, fire a shot straight out the back door, and hit every room in the house (except the bathroom.) I
n New Orleans, shotgun doubles are common, two shotguns together with a party wall, the landlady (usually) lives in one half and rents out the other. Also, camelback doubles, they have a second story towards the back. Lots in New Orleans are long and narrow, this has to do with the fact that early settlers settled along the river, and the pattern just continued. |
