Miz Grammar:

Re: Don't use "sympathy" when a stock is moving up.

Now we know that the Ciena material is pretty light when we're reduced to debating use of the word "sympathy"! I'll play along, though.

According to graylab.ac.uk

Sympathy - "2. An agreement of affections or inclinations, or a conformity of natural temperament, which causes persons to be pleased, or in accord, with one another; as, there is perfect sympathy between them."

This is the meaning that I intended when I proposed that Ciena would have a "sympathy" move up with the E-Tek IPO. Not sympathy as in a distressed situation or commiseration. Although maybe many Ciena longs may feel that those apply as well! =-}

I often hear business commentators say that some stock has a "sympathy move up" or a "sympathy move down" as the case may be. I bet that they refer to the same meaning of the word sympathy.

Good luck,

-John
