No, Colin, I am not missing the point. I was correcting an incorrect statement that was apparently being propagated as fact. I don't actually disagree with your statement about playing safe, I just don't think it's doing anyone any favors to give them a wrong impression of things. In point of fact, going with UUNet (or whoever) does eliminate the issue of oversold bandwidth. However, this is not the random chance game you seem to imply. Here in eastern mass, there are a couple of local ISPs who deliver excellent quality dialup service. They are well known. The thing is, if they deliver good connections for surfing, downloading, etc, they will also deliver good realtick performance (same issues). And you have more personal service. Different strokes... |
