cb, the concept is that over the long term, the market is rational. i don't think many would argue that short term movements are rational at all. however, now we get to argue over what long and short actually mean ;-)

i think the market will be rational over the longer term and that is why i buy puts. i reduce risk by buying smaller amounts out of the money b/c i know that long can often turn to longer.

btw, was it rational for the nikkei to trade at 39k ten years prior to getting 15k for it? the markets are supposed to discount uncertainty not reward it.
