Diana,
Your friend's email link points to the level how press is so desperately behind MSFT. That patent which he quotes can be easily
negated given so much published materials in public. This also shows
how US Patent office does not have good technically qualified guys at the helm.
When a bunch of money hungry lawyers decide about technical merits what else do you expect. I have personally seen a couple of Patents
which have so many ridiculus claims and still they get accepted.
All you need to get a patent is get a good lawyer and write some of the obvious stuffs in lawyers language. One of the requirements in
patent application is to include a list of references (prior
arts ) that are along the same line of your claim and show that your
claim is not there in any of the referenced material. People abuse
this list by selectively quoting things that supports their claim while "conveniently" leaving things that are very similar.
So much for the patent.
It is pity that in software field everybody copies everybody else's
idea and code and make billions of dollars.
Think without emotional bias how MSFT became the richest company in the world without any original technical idea.
