Hi Richie: This is from Greenberg's column this morning . . . .
Free speech: In the wake of WavePhore's (WAVO:Nasdaq) public assault last week on JJC after his negative comments about the company on CNBC's "Squawk Box," JJC told me he probably will never again make negative public comments about a company. WavePhore has requested that JJC's comments be probed by the Securities and Exchange Commission. What's more, JJC's comments sparked a letter-writing campaign to have him banned from CNBC.
One letter writer called his CNBC appearance "inexcusably UNPROFESSIONAL! This one individual made the entire staff of CNBC look like morons. CNBC should make the smart decision to replace this person with someone who is PROFESSIONALLY OBJECTIVE in his or her analysis."
Uh, hate to be the one to break the news, but money managers who co-host "Squawk" or appear on TV and are quoted in publications often have a vested interest in stocks they mention. Oh, but I get it, that's OK just as long as what they say is positive. If what they say is negative, they oughta be investigated. Gimme a break. These wackadoodles, as Barbara in makeup at CNBC likes to call all zanies, ought to go back into the asylum.
Speaking of which, the latest round of reader revolt (which also gives a little more insight into who's buying some of these stocks) started with this beaut: "Herb, If anybody took your advice on Friday and sold Compaq (CPQ:NYSE) just as it broke through its resistance at $38 1/4, they would be very upset. As for Radio Shack, it is now a great repair location for CPQ owners. You go to Radio Shack to try out the CPQ PCs and then buy somewhere else. Most people still think CPQ sells IBM (IBM:NYSE) Aptiva's. As a stockholder in GE (GE:NYSE), you make me nervous every time you're on [CNBC]. I hope GE does spin off the broadcasting divisions. You and Cramer are becoming I guess the new Motley Curl Fools." And then there was this from some guy named Jim Baker, who wrote: "Your inaccurate, biased reporting is a disgrace!! I'm talking about your lies about CPQ sales. You've had problems before with others like Wavephone [sic]. Keep up with your lies, and maybe someday we can get a legal conviction on you. Hey, do you have a problem with E.P. [CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer] at CPQ because of his nationality?? Come on now. Probably not, just a short-seller with privy info. Maybe, huh, Herb?? Have a nice day."
On that note, hope you do, too. |
