CNT Adds Wide-Area Capabilities to Sutmyn's Scimitar Virtual Tape Server

MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Computer Network Technology (CNT)® (Nasdaq: CMNT - news) announced today that its storage area networking (SAN) technology is certified to interoperate with Sutmyn Storage Corporation's Scimitar® Virtual Tape Server (VTS). These solutions have been deployed successfully at a customer site to deliver a backup and restore operation for disaster recovery by enabling Scimitar/VTS™ functions over unlimited distances.

The certified solution from CNT and Sutmyn is currently in production at a Fortune 100 institution. This solution backs up system data from disk and transmits it via T3 communication lines to Scimitar/VTS at a remote recovery site. Sutmyn's Scimitar/VTS architecture allows enterprise data to be recorded and retrieved at disk speeds while conforming to standard tape protocol. CNT's high-performance data channel connectivity hardware transparently enables this communication over a wide-area network, allowing the stored data to be kept at a safe distance from the computer center.

''As the world's only open virtual tape system solution, the Scimitar/VTS offers customers more flexible and cost-effective use of their existing tape storage,'' said Flavio Santoni, executive vice president of marketing and business development at Sutmyn Storage Corporation. ''By combining Sutmyn's leading virtual tape technology with CNT's expertise in wide-area connectivity, we now provide VTS solutions over unlimited distances, offering a superior backup and restore solution to our customers.''

''CNT is dedicated to providing SAN solutions that leverage existing technologies, while offering the added-value of extending the use of those technologies over wide-area distances,'' said Mark Knittel, vice president of marketing and business development at Computer Network Technology. ''Virtual tape systems are an important component in disaster recovery protection. Our work with Sutmyn ensures that we continue to enable our customers to leverage the best technologies for their IT architecture.''
