Netscape releases new browser engine

Netscape Communications Corp. Monday will unveil the first software to come out of its mozilla.org free source code movement.
Netscape Gecko, the company's new browser engine, will be released to developers, who can incorporate it into their products and Web sites. The engine serves as the brains behind the browsing functions, and Netscape is in a race with rival Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT) to win the browser market. Netscape (Nasdaq:NSCP) is promising that Gecko will be leaner and faster than previous browsing technology, and it will allow cross-platform browsing.

Gecko will Internet-enable devices that have not previously been able to connect to the Internet, the company said. It's promising a "write once, browser anywhere scenario," similar to Sun Microsystems Inc.'s (Nasdaq:SUNW) Java motto, "write once, run anywhere."

The technology will be included in upcoming versions of the Netscape's browser. America Online Inc. (NYSE:AOL), which is currently in the process of acquiring Netscape, will be among the first to use the technology as part of its chat software.

Earlier this year the company released the source code to its Communicator browser. Developers can access the code at the company's Mozilla.org site.
