Michael, **O/T** south Island of NZ is great for skiiing. There are 4 resorts within an hour or so of Queenstown. You can heli-ski as well. The South Island offers a great range of activities (skiiing, white water rafting, bungee jumping, whale watching, golfing, you name it) and fantastic scenery (fjords, glaciers, mountain lakes, forests etc). Well worth a visit.
