William is right. We are in a new age and I'm to old to keep up. < Scottsdale, Arizona, Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Beyond.com, an online software reseller, said it will begin television ads in major U.S. cities as early as this week, part of a $10 million campaign to raise public awareness of the company.
The Sunnyvale, California-based company changed its name from Software.net in August and unveiled a six-month ad campaign on radio, print, Internet, outdoor advertising and TV.
Beyond.com wants to be the top seller of software on the Internet, a market that it expects to reach $10 billion by 2002. Market researcher International Data Corp. said online software sales reached $14 million last year.
''We're trying to equate Beyond.com with software. The advertising is very important to build that branding,'' said Chief Executive Mark Breier. He spoke at the Credit Suisse First Boston technology conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, last week.
Breier said he's optimistic about the company's sales over the holidays because it's a traditionally strong season for consumers to buy personal computers.
''PC sales beget software sales. Higher PC sales beget higher software sales,'' he said.
The company didn't disclose exactly where it would run the TV ads.
Beyond.com rose 1 9/16 to 23 13/16 in late morning trading.
