Mike..

RE: Cable modems vs ADSL..

I just signed up with Optimum@Home..
Cablevision of CT's version of cable
access..I was on dial-up with an ISP
@ 28.8bps prior.. Two comments.. the @Home
service is definitely faster though not
blazingly so and cheaper for me @35.95 for
@home vs $21.95 to Netcom + $40.00 to SNET
for a 2nd phone line..which I no longer need..
I had some signal strength problems initially
with @home which took about 3 weeks to rectify..
I'm a little disappointed with the apparant speed
of the service which may be more of a function
of the traffic at the sites I frequent and the
PC that I'm using for access...155Mhz pentium +
16 mbytes Ram..a minimum system according to the
@home tech..but I don't know If this would impact
the apparent speed of the service..

I'm keeping my dial-up account as a back-up
for a couple of months..but it seems to me that
the cable guys have a price competitive high
speed product here...I can't even get ADSL
here if I wanted it at this point..
