Dell servers, storage go hand in hand

Capping what has been a season full of product introductions, Dell on Monday introduced storage and server products ready for installation in the "rack dense" environments that Dell has been touting of late.
The storage products include the PowerVault 200S SCSI disk array, the PowerVault 130T DLT tape library, and the PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller 2 (PERC 2). Dell Computer also announced feature upgrades to its high-end PowerVault 650F storage system.
The storage products bolster both the low and high ends -- SCSI and Fibre Channel, respectively -- of Dell's storage line.
Dell's focus on storage products this year -- the company has forged agreements with StorageTek, Network Appliance, Clariion, Legato, and Veritas -- constitutes both short- and long-term strategies, said Sean Derrington, senior research analyst at the Meta Group, in Stamford, Conn.
Storage products provide a healthy revenue stream because "they are going to dwarf the price of Intel hardware," Derrington said.
But beyond this, according to Derrington, "Dell is coming with the second component, so when they sell a server they can sell robust storage."
Dell's PowerVault 200S is 3U in height and houses as many as eight Ultra 2 LVD drives. The unit ranges in price from $3,000 to $17,000.
The 30-cartridge, 2-terabyte PowerVault 130T storage system is a rebranded StorageTek product priced from $17,799.
The PERC 2, developed by Adaptec, is a 64-bit, 66-MHz RAID controller that features battery backup. The unit is priced at $1,899 as an option with Dell PowerEdge servers.
Dell has upgraded its PowerVault 650F disk array to allow for 9GB and 18GB Fibre Channel drives running at 10,000 rpm.
To accompany the new storage products, Dell is rolling out its PowerEdge 4350 server, powered by two Pentium II processors with speeds ranging from 350 MHz to 450 MHz. The server is available in a 4U rack-mount model, priced from $4,943.
