I compounded the problem. I ran a little program to remove any "imaginary" posts from people's inboxes and managed to wipe out a good number of public message notifications as well. No messages were lost...just the inbox notifications of public messages...so you can still get a defacto list of the public responses to you by going to your "To me" folder. I'm sorry for my recklessness. It affected anyone who joined prior to 1997.
