The stymied MAI is likely to reemerge in the WTO. Apparently the WTO role is under consideration to include investments. The European Parliament also referred to continuing MAI negotiations in the WTO back in October.

We will actively coordinate our participation in the Geneva process, with a view to securing a factual report to the General Council by the end of 1998 which adequately reflects the discussions which has taken place in the Working Group on Trade and Investment. We will consult further on possible additional work that might be done in this area in 1999, with a view to deepening our joint analysis on the inclusion of
investment in the WTO agenda. We will seek the support of all our partners for next steps towards the creation of investment rules in the WTO."
