What is in it for State Attorneys. I am not good with US politics but these guys are elected officials. If there are enough pro MSFTers, it could be tough to get elected. Election turnouts are probably higher for people who have retirement plans or pensions. In addition, Index funds are becoming more popular because they outperform managed funds and of course MSFT is the number one holding. (I am assuming S and P 500 funds are the most popular)

You could be right that there is not much for them to gain- but there is something for them to lose. My point is why should they take a chance.

However I agree that the main reason is that the case is for the benefit of the competitors and not the consumers and SC state attorney pointed this out.
