Will somebody someday build a computer called "The Rugged One"

Welcome to the thread.

The Supermicro case mentioned in Sean's post is a heavy case. I hear you can stand on it. You could add a filter to the inlet fan to minimize dust. I believe the PC Power and Cooling case claims a filtered inlet. It is also a higher quality case well as the California PC Computer cases.

I believe the Quantum bigfoot harddrive in my Compaq Presario was subject to vibration problems. I had several failures which I believe were a result of nudging the case during harddrive activity. IBM drives have a good reputation for quality. I believe some drive manufactures publish a vibration spec. It is certainly something worth checking into. The newer Maxtor drives have been well received. Bad drives seem to come in groups and are not specific to one manufacturer.

I have two IBM harddrives that are subject to the vibrations of a diesel engine on a boat. The drives have been working for several years without a problem The drives in two Micron computers have been working for two years as well ( Some day I will look inside to find out the drive manufacturer).
