VST Technologies, Iomega and IBM Team Up to Offer Zip 100 Drive to the Enterprise
Business Wire - December 07, 1998 18:01

ACTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 7, 1998--VST Technologies, Inc. today announced its intent, through an agreement with IBM Corporation, to offer internal Zip(r)100 Drives through the "Options by IBM" program.

VST will manufacture an UltraslimBay(tm) Zip 100 Drive for the recently shipped ThinkPad(tm) 600 Series computers under the IBM logo. VST will utilize the latest Iomega(r) 12.7mm slimline Zip drive mechanism to address the lightweight and thin 1.4 inch form factor of IBM's newest 600 Series ThinkPads.

Through the agreement, IBM will offer its reseller and Authorized Assembly Program Partners a completed Zip100 drive, which includes everything end users will need to install the Zip100 Drive directly into the UltraslimBay of the ThinkPad 600 computer.

"Iomega's Zip technology is one of the hottest storage technologies available today," said Bob Galush, Director, Business Line Management, IBM Personal Systems Group. "By offering Zip drives as an available option in our commercial systems, we give our enterprise customers added versatility through enhanced capacity, speed and portability. We are teaming with VST to expand the removable storage options for our ThinkPad 600 customers."

"The notebook has become an important tool for business users, and Iomega is pleased to expand its notebook Zip drive relationship with VST," said David Gantt, vice president of Iomega's Zip OEM business, Iomega Corporation. "By adding a Zip drive, business professionals can be more productive because they can protect critical business information and share that information with clients and vendors on the road."

With more than 19 million Zip drives shipped, Zip drives and disks have become commonplace in businesses, government agencies, homes, schools and in service bureaus like Kinkos, Mailboxes Etc., Sir Speedy, PIP and AlphaGraphics. Zip drive users can rely on having access to their important Zip disk-stored information, virtually anytime, anywhere. Beyond storing and transporting large files, genuine100MB Zip disks can be used to save, share and organize Internet downloads, voice-embedded e-mail, music clips, software, games and digital photos.

VST Technologies began shipping the first internal Zip100 drives in 1997 with the introduction of models for IBM ThinkPads with the UltraBay I (755, 760 and 765 series), followed by IBM ThinkPads with the UltraBay II (770 series). In addition, VST manufactures the Zip100 for NEC Versa notebooks with the VersaBay, for the Apple PowerBook series and Fujitsu LifeBook series notebook computers.
