I don't see that the two issues are necessarily intertwined. Yes, some investor's may have capitalized on what they perceived to be a negative story, but certainly not every shorter who read that story ran out and shorted Warner Lambert, and most certainly every investor that is short Warner Lambert is not in that position because of the topic of that news story. I think you're trying to make a case for "blood money" or something akin to that and I just don't see it that way. Death and pharmaceuticals or death from pharmaceuticals are intertwined. The investor in pharmaceuticals is aware of that investing risk.
