the V.90 modem is still in the box, so the system still sees it.

I agree it sounds like a software issue. It seems like Windows thinks the clip board is full so it will not accept clipboard entries. Although I suppose bad RAM could have a similar effect. Is the problem always initiated in Netscape? Once the problem occurs can you send anything to the clipboard in any application?

I get a little confused with hardware and software conflicts. If you disable the modem in a hardware configuration can there be a hardware conflict? Will the drivers still load? If there is no conflict in the device manager can there still be a hardware conflict?

I was not suggesting you switch to Opera on a permanent basis. My thinking is do what ever it takes to get a working system and then start adding the preferred components one at a time. I know it is easier said than done especially if you do not have a back up computer.

I do not recall but I assume you have done a complete harddrive scan. Just grasping at straws, you might try a permanent partition for the swap file. With stable performance with less software one might assume a bad sector towards the end of the drive.

Maybe there is a way to load a generic VGA video driver similar to what is done in SAFE mode. My guess is it may be one of the drivers for the hardware and not the hardware itself.

Could heat be an issue? Does the problem occur more frequently after extended use?

Just guessing
