Great response, Zeuspaul, looks like I'll have to go through this thread. Well my current piece of junk computer is beyond redemption (put together by a 16-year old kid who didn't know what he was doing, and really in an inappropriate case and they even forgot the rubber feet...), probably full of bootleg components (most of which get replaced as they die)....

BUT NEXT TIME WILL BE DIFFERENT!

The best part about my system is my APC Back-UPS Pro 420 power protection unit. If only the whole thing were like that.

Now my next question may make me sound completely clueless. Actually I am only a little clueless.

My recent bad sector problem has not caused a total failure, but the Scandisk fix attempt was not a total success either. Some data was lost and it mentioned a FAT problem. On Windows startup it's having trouble reading (makes a noise) at one point but does manage to start up. Overall there is nothing noticeable that's been lost, part of a file of something inessential perhaps. But my question is what should I do now. I wonder if (a) reinstalling Windows (b) partitioning the drive might help the system run better without being dogged by any bad sectors in the midst of the file system. Or is it really the case that I will need to (c) reformat the drive or worse (d) just get a new one. Hope I'm not cluttering up the thread with unrelated stuff.
