Our top choice this year likely will prove a controversial one.
Michael Dell has appeared on several of this newspaper's Top
25 lists in the past, but he has never made it to the top
spot--until now. But when you survey the major news events of
the past year--changing industry business models, the growing
emphasis on customer service and inventory cost controls, the
rise of channel assembly, to name just a few--there is little
doubt that Dell and his fast-growing Texas computer company
have had a major impact. More so than any other executive this
year, Dell and his manufacturing vision have prodded many
competitors to adjust their operations and improve efficiency.


The article concludes with
And some pundits say Dell actually has figured out the secret
of utilizing the channel for adding value in terms of service and
support, while playing down the channel's role in other areas.
As one Microsoft executive told a channel player last year:
"Why don't you guys just unilaterally call Dell a part of the
channel and declare victory?"

Dell's strategy may be the opposite: Recruit service providers
into the direct model and declare victory.


So even the channel is buying Dell???
