A report written about the DST/DCRsi roadmap presented at a THIC meeting in late 1996. Also, treasure this link. Hands down, the best source of storage news.

Some interesting nuggets from the report:

1) Flexible keepered media????

...... The DIS and DST products are currently undergoing Beta testing for doubling the capacity of storage on the current line of tapes. The rate of recording will stay at 120Mbps sustained and 160Mbps burst. In 1998, the rate will improve to 240Mbps [30 MBps] sustained and 320Mbps burst. By 2000, the sustained data rate will be 320Mbps[40 MBps]with the burst rate rising to 820Mbps. The tapes used will incorporate an advanced metal particle formulation with a thin magnetic layer which will support twice the in-track density......

2) ..... In 1998, it will be possible to achieve a data rate of 480Mbps [60 MBps] using a newly-developed 4-channel record head, based on market needs. The aircraft industry is the most interested in this technology so far.....

That would be Boeing and Lockheed duking it out for the right to build the next-generation fighter jet for the Armed Services. This is the airplane design platform that is supposed to be adaptable for use by the Army, the Navy, the Marines and the Air Force. It is estimated to bring in $1 trillion in revenues -- airplanes, spare parts, service contracts -- over the 25-30 year life of the contract.
