Your point was brought home by my visit to a high tech company's cafeteria in the following way.

I overheard part of a conversation of perhaps the CFO or someone close to the CFO to perhaps an analyst or a representative of investors or lenders, and they were discussing the company as doctors might a patient. There are several different views of a company that I deduced from the snippets I overheard. There is the Press Release view, there is the insider view (the best, and the view I was getting snippets of, over my coffee and paperwork), there is the vendor view (gee, they seem to ordering a lot of our equipment), the employee view, and the lender's view, and feel free to add to the list.

The point that I'm relating to is that these views can affect activity in the company's stock. About the worst view is that of the press release, and the small investor in a small company is often limited to just it. And that is why prices can often telegraph fundamentals.
