I read a little more about that story -- woman was a homeless single parent. Probably pretty marginal. I don't know whether she really had the capacity for willful neglect ... But I agree with the last sentiment: those who are wealthy -- includes everyone who posts here to one extent or another, ought to consider others -- it is only money, but they are human beings.
