Great A&P Embarks On Strategic Plan To Boost Profits

MONTVALE, N.J. (Reuters) - The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. Inc. said Tuesday it would open between 175 and 200 superstores, sell or close 127 unprofitable stores and speed up its modernization plan to boost profits and maintain its standing as a top U.S. supermarket chain.
The company, owner of the A&P chain, said it would pump $400 million into capital improvements in 1999 and expects to incur costs of about $35 million over the next four quarters. It will also realign and consolidate its distribution, manufacturing and administrative operations and cut its working capital.
