Check it out - shop the web at shoptheweb.amazon.com

Based on the little bit of browsing I did, there is no apparent way for the merchant to know that you were referred from Amazon when making a purchase. So it looks like Amazon either gets money from page hits redirected, or else it sells space on its shop the web page as advertising.

I'm impressed by my initial visit, it appears that the site is layed out well, similar to the Yahoo! interface. I checked out the travel section, and there are lots of choices, more than I would have expected.

This gives Amazon the potential to make agreements with other e-commerce vendors for prominent display space on its web pages. The potential for lots of press releases is huge.
