Fund Mgr Treick Recommends Small Caps With Free Cash Flow

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The manager of the best-performing small-cap fund in 1998 recommends investors focus on free cash flow when considering small caps.

"They (companies) have to have some ability to produce some free cash flow," Philip Treick told CNBC Tuesday.

Treick's Transamerica Premier Small Company (TPSCX) is the best-performing small-cap fund in 1998, with a gain of 49.6%. The fund is part of insurer Transamerica's family of no-load funds.

Treick's stock picks include Probusiness Services Inc. (PRBZ), which provides employee administration services to big companies such as Dell Computer Corp. (DELL) and Gillette Co. (G).

In the arena of Internet stocks, he likes Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Hollywood Entertainment Corp. (HLYW) because both companies have found respective niches.

Treick also recommends Envoy Corp. (ENVY), Speedway Motorsports Inc. (TRK) and Level One Communications Inc. (LEVL).
