Chris,
My perceptions about ABL come from a long-time awareness of the animated feature industry, knowledge of the talent at PIXAR, and a professional background in computer imaging. My perceptions about their success in their merchandising come from:
1. The unexpected long life of TS merchandising income to PIXAR as reflected in their recent surprise earnings report.
2. Anecdotal evidence from friends who inhabit toy stores since they have children.
3. The absence of real competition from characters in other films. Antz seriously compromised its merchandising effort we are told by opening earlier than thought, Babe is a bomb, and Prince of Egypt opens too late in the season (and isn't a threat, anyway).
4. PIXAR has a much better deal with Disney this time around.
5. ABL has more original character merchandise than TS, which had to share the cut with Hasbro, etc., characters (Mr. Potato Head, etc.).
6. My subjective impression that the characters are winners as toys.
