D'Amato Cool to Impeachment Trial nytimes.com But the wiser heads here will inform us it's just sour grapes that he won't be in on it, I'm sure. President Clinton got an unexpected boost Tuesday from one of his earliest Whitewater critics, Republican Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, who warned a presidential impeachment ''would be sowing the seeds of discord.'' D'Amato, who lost his New York Senate seat in last month's elections, stopped short of saying he personally opposed impeaching Clinton but said he believed that moving the matter to the Senate would only harm the country. He also praised fellow New York Republican Rep. Peter King, who has come out against impeachment, and said the GOP will have to have ''the courage to say they will not march to a partisan drum'' if the party wants to remain in control of Congress. D'Amato told a farewell party Tuesday night that a Senate trial ''would be a wrenching experience'' and ''would entail months and months of partisan bickering.'' ''I'm not saying we should reward him with a gold star,'' D'Amato said of Clinton. But he added: ''Look at the reality of the situation.''
